GC 4060 4 Color Paperboard Cup Holder

About the Project

This is a made up brand for my packaging and specialty printing class at Clemson University. This specific project focuses on the use of printing on paperboard with all CMYK inks in order to store my main product of my brand. I chose to make a cupholder to hold two glass bottles at once. The holder can be carried around while secured shut, and it can open up to allow for easy access to the bottles as well.

Purpose: To identify and utilize key design elements that are utilized in packaging and design.

Workflow

Thumbnails

When thinking of a design for this package, I couldn’t decide if I wanted to use elements that I used in my 3 color label, 4 color sticker, or come up with a new design that coordinated with the brand as a whole. The thumbnails that I created have a variety of different inspiration behind them. I knew that I would need to print double sided since the package itself would open up as well, and wanted to keep the inside of the package on the more simple side.

I received constructive criticism from my classmates before creating the final design. I ended up basing my final design on the bottom right thumbnail.

Proofs

The image on the left is how my proofed package looks from the front, and the image on the right shows a side view of my proof with the visible insert.

My proof is not printed to scale, due to substrate size limitations on the press we use to proof our packages. I also did not print the inside design on the proof since it was a simple gradient.
